Unity in the Community is a new public art exhibit on Main Street in downtown Fitchburg, MA.

12 artworks from 9 local artists were selected for this project not only for their artistic merit, but because the imagery embodied the message behind Unity in the Community:

Love for one another, peace, respect, and communication. It means neighborhood pride, togetherness, and uplifting the community. We may not all come from the same backgrounds, or points of view; we may not share the same politics, language, or religion, but we are all humans sharing spaces with one another, and can put shared harmony above  our differences.

The selected artworks have been printed onto perforated vinyl wrap and placed on different windows up and down Main Street. The locations of the artwork are:

 305 Main Street

 470 Main Street

491 Main Street

A Place at the Table

"A Place at the Table is an invitation for people in the community to gather, share and participate. Inspired by my own experiences as a Fitchburg resident, it reflects the sense of belonging when people support each other and celebrates the connections formed in community spaces. While the Nashua River, brick building, and natural landscape set the scene in Fitchburg, the picnic table centers the people in the community who come together during the city's celebrations, events, and programs. On the table and its surroundings are food and objects that serve as tools for people to connect with one another such as food, music, arts, and sports. This painting represents a community that overcomes their differences to come together to share their traditions and experiences and listen to each other. The empty space at the table serves as an invitation for community members and visitors alike to join the gathering and contribute their experiences and views to the community of Fitchburg."

Ascension

"My work is a reflection of my transformation. My paintings express the positive and negative effects that transformation has on society. I explore the disruption created by the intersection of life experiences and hopes for the future. These abstract, ambiguous projections come from exploring spirituality and theorized spaces. The memories I hold and all the spaces I inhabit have all existed before me. My paintings are created by reflecting on how I believe energy exists in these spaces, how it can grow and manifest, and how all energy comes together as one source. I believe that creating earnest work that is playful is an act of rebellion in a world filled with serious concerns. In my practice, I prioritize play because it is an innate part of being human. The vibrant colors are confined in shapes, which express being burdened by the world, feeling restricted, and unable to acquire a greater sense of freedom. My hope is for others to perceive the world around them differently by exploring their reality, their spirituality, and their beliefs, free of judgement. The paintings take form differently, but the process is inherently the same with acrylic paint on canvas. Through art and particularly painting, I can explore the realms of the mind and redefine surreal abstraction in the 21st century."

9 of Pentacles

"Nine of Plants explores the idea of community through a shared garden space. Each plant maintains its own unique form, color, and character while existing within a larger ecosystem of care, growth, and interdependence. The piece reflects my belief that healthy communities do not require uniformity; rather, they thrive when diverse individuals are given the opportunity to grow side by side. Through imagery of cultivation, stewardship, and coexistence, the garden becomes a metaphor for a connected community where differences contribute to the strength and beauty of the whole."

Swinging Between Two Worlds

"This painting holds opposing forces in one body—fire and water, grief and growth. The drips suggest what can’t be contained, while the tree and swing mark a distant place of innocence and return. It’s a portrait of learning to live where calm and chaos meet. I used surreal, fragmented imagery to show an inner landscape shaped by contrast: cooling blues against rising flame. The face becomes a shoreline where emotion spills, transforms, and settles. The tree and swing act as a symbol of grounding—memory, refuge, and the hope of balance."

Multiple hearts work together

"By using the symbolism of the heart, we get a glimpse of the variety of emotions in our lives. As we grow and understand differences we are capable of appreciating each other and our hope to be caring to all people."

3. Last Light

"The first two focus on contrast, having two characters that are different but still similar in many ways or connect through their environment. The third piece connects to the theme of Unity because the hands hold two candles together to make the light shine brighter, a metaphor to show that connection can amplify things in a positive way, help you see things in a clearer way or give you guidance in the dark."

All Together

"This particular piece is centered around women from various backgrounds sharing their gifts and supporting each other's lights. Community care. Global villages was the inspiration."

2. Harmonic Spectrum

"I am constantly inspired by the energy that exists around, in, and between us. I've felt this energy most strongly in quiet moments in nature, viewing the night sky, and in relationships between people. While I typically paint animals as representations of this eternal energy, my direct experiences move me to create moments as I felt them. As a woman, and a mother, there is sometimes a disconnect between my needs and society's expectations. In those moments of frustration, and exhaustion, the community that brought me peace was that of other women. Women who themselves were exhausted, in the throws of motherhood or other internal chaos, and showed up anyway in an effort to support another woman. I would not be able to create without the support of that community of women, and I am forever grateful."
